Vancouver - Inderjit Singh Reyat has been granted a statutory release from prison to a halfway house. He was charged with perjury in 2006 for repeatedly lying during his testimony at a trial into the bombing deaths of 331 people, mostly Canadians.
Reyat was found guilty in 2010 and sentenced to a record nine years in prison, or seven years and seven months after accounting for time served. Under the Canadian law, offenders must be granted statutory release after they have served two thirds of their sentence.
The Parole Board of Canada says Reyat must obey eight conditions of release.
They include not associating with anyone who is involved in criminal activity, or holds extremist views, or is engaged in political activity; not contacting the victims’ families; reporting all contact with any men he meets; and getting counselling to deal with violent thoughts and convincing himself of things that aren’t true.
